 Meet Nigel X3PO!

 October 2

Our robot is completed, thanks to Tara's enthusiasm!  Tara did a great job teaching me and Megan how to program the robot (although I still haven't quite caught on).

We completed "Full Speed Ahead"; Nigel is now able to move backward and forward!

While programming Nigel to move backward, the message, "Broken Data Wire" appeared.  We weren't able to download the file, and we tried replacing the USB cord.  This didn't work - we still weren't able to download the file.  Tara and Mrs. Wood tried everything to fix it - we were finally able to figure out that the data wire is a series of steps (the boxes that show up when you program the robot).  Ours was in the wrong area in order for it to work.  Megan created a new document, and moved the contents of the "broken" page to it.  This allowed us to complete the file download.

Our major problem now is that we can't seem to make the little Lego man stay seated on the robot.

Some glue might be necessary...

The little Lego man now has a name!  He has been dubbed "Buns of Steel" (BOS) due to the unique strength of his posterior in remaining attached to Nigel.  Welcome, BOS!

Megan was able to complete "Wheels and Distance," "Right Face," and "Measured Turns."

It was decided that having only one programmer is inefficient, so we are all going to take turns.

After some mishaps (and a runaway robot) Nigel is doing well.  He now has the ability to turn in all directions, and respond to some auditory commands!

Service Disclaimer: Shadow-knowledge is abounding! Well, not really.

Information deems it necessary that it be said we need to be a team, and therefore honest with each other, plzthnx. Okay then? Alright good. Moving on...

Today was an interesting day. Unfortunately, much of our team was missing: one was out ill; another MIA due to a supposed "after-school Class Meeting"; and others still, had to split. Thus, only Josee was the key to success.

However, that's not to say no progress was made; "Light Track" was finished in it's fullness, as well as the auditory commands. The former of the two had Nigel a bit confused; nonetheless, after several mishaps, runaways, bumps, demonic rages, and failures to pass his driving test, our Nigel finally found the knack of following a given (although crudely made, i.e. looseleaf paper and a black dry-erase board marker) track-line with his small-scale LIDAR. Thanks to Josee - she really did all the work - we're a fine step ahead now, and we've begun to teach our robotic friend how to cope with crashes in the "Obstacle" section of the programming. Hopefully we can keep going at this pace.

But, alas, BOS has, once again, found some difficulties in keeping his bum attached to his seat. He has been tentatively demoted to BOR ("Buns of Rubber"). Perhaps some glue and/ or liquid cement really will be necessary...

We gained a new member today in the form of one Sam Gleeson, as well as having Angela back in full attendence. So, hello there, new people! Live long and prosper!

Thankfully, both of the aforementioned seemed very enthusitastic to be a part of Team Two, and, in extension, striving to put Nigel to his optimal efficiency. Unfortunately to say, however, is that Sam had to leave early to due occupational responsibilities - ones that apparently result in misadventures - and, thus, a programmer was needed for the day. As we have committed to taking turns, Angela was put in charge of this week's activity - namely, the "Obstacle" section. Hazards were aplently, and mishaps were frequent. Nevertheless, Angela was persistent, caught on quickly, and began to sort out the issues of Nigel's penchant for not shutting off or responding to commands when he's supposed to, in concerns to this current assignment. Seriously, she got down to some serious mathematics to fix it. When all was said and done, we had accomplished a good amount of progress, and succeeded in turning Angela into a raving robotics addict (who needs Sour Patch Kids to work properly).

Alas, though, good reader, not all was well in the Empire of Nigelius, for there was another predicament: BOS is still being unresponsive to our attempts to make his  bum stay still. Therefore, punishment has become necessary. We are currently torturing the little plastic man via placing his legs between the unforgiving metal rings of our team binder.

We like hearing him scream...

November 5

Not all of Team Two was able to meet today, due to the lack of Tara and Her Amazing Laptop.  The program was downloaded onto another computer, and Ultrasonic was attempted by Josee, Angela, Iqra, and Megan.

Unfortunately, they failed horribly.  Another try will be attempted next week.

November 12

We tried to speed Nigel up, despite the fact that he was acting lazy.  Many attempts were made at changing the system to make him move faster, but to no avail.  We tried and tried; Nigel simply would not budge.

Ahh, sweet success!  At the last minute, Tara made what she believed would be a futile attempt.  However, Nigel gave it his all, to the amazement of the onlookers.

After acting like a two-year-old, Nigel decided to behave as all mature robots should.  He sped up accordingly, making all of his programmers proud.  Let me tell you, there were no dry eyes in the room this evening.

Now that this crisis has been averted, another has arisen:  Buns of Steel is M.I.A.!  He was last seen eyeing an attractive Lego Lady on Wednesday evening.  Could this be the beginning of a Lego Love Affair?

December 3

Praise the Lord!  BOS has returned!  After desperately searching, spending long, cold nights walking through the pouring rain, we were able to welcome our dear BOS with open arms.

But where was he, you may ask?  Why, he ran away with Mrs. Wood!  But in the end, the allure of the Open Plain was too great.

We managed to complete all of his programming, although we are saving "Ultrasound" for later in the game.  Hopefully he'll put a little pep in his step, considering the amount of time and effort put into his upbringing.  A rather ungrateful little robot...

Keep it up, Team 2! It's nice to see that you didn't give up when you ran into a programming glitch. Maybe your little Lego man needs riding lessons. :o)

Oh, by the way, I shall bring in liquid cement for the poor Lego fellow in feeble attempts to keep him in his place :)

Let's keep up the good work :D

Liquid cement might work better than riding lessons - good thinking.

It's a fine thing we finally found a way to stick him on there - and for good :)

Thanks for the support, all (commenters, readers, and team members alike)!

Don't get discouraged when others on the team don't show up. You're doing this for YOU and, as you noted, progress is made no matter who is there. Who knows, maybe the others are working on a fool-proof way to keep BOS in place! :o)

Way to go, Nigel! But what's this about BOS going AWOL??!! Have you received a ransom note? Those LEGO ladies can be unscrupulous and may be working for one of the other teams. Be very vigilant.
